How to Get Rid of Roaches in Your Car: A DIY Plan

To get rid of roaches in your car, take out all food, trash and cardboard, vacuum the seats and crevices, then put sticky traps and roach bait stations under the seats and in the trunk. Don’t bomb or spray the cabin. Supplies run about $36, and you’re done when the traps stay empty for a month.

Cost: about $36 in supplies. Difficulty: moderate. Call a pro if your traps still catch roaches after a month of baiting, your home is infested too, or roaches are coming out of the dashboard or vents.

This page covers which roach is in your car, whether your house has them too, the four steps, safety with kids and pets, and costs. We haven’t tested products ourselves; it rests on UC IPM, NPIC, Rutgers, Texas A&M and California Department of Public Health guidance, plus list prices.

Why Are Roaches in My Car? They Ride In or Wander In

German cockroaches ride in on grocery bags, drink cartons, boxes and used furniture. UC IPM says German and brownbanded cockroaches live and breed entirely indoors, and they can do the same in a car. Even a clean car feeds them: crumbs trapped in cracks and spilled drinks collect between seats and in cup holders.

Big, dark roaches on the roof at night are outdoor roaches drawn to nearby lights, trees or dumpsters. If traps inside stay empty, none live in the car.

Does a Roach in Your Car Mean Your House Has Them? Check the Kitchen

Not always, but check. The bags and boxes that carry German roaches into a car also carry them into the house. Leave sticky traps under the kitchen sink and behind the fridge for a few days and look for pepper-like droppings, egg cases and other signs of roaches.

If the home traps catch roaches, the car will keep getting reinfested until the house is clear, so follow our plan to get rid of roaches in the house at the same time. Renting? Tell your landlord in writing; NPIC notes no one in an apartment can fix it alone.

Can You Get Roaches Out of Your Car Overnight? Only a Stray

A single roach that wandered in from outside, yes: vacuum it up or toss it out. UC IPM says traps often catch roaches within the first 24 hours, so if yours stay empty for several days, it was likely a stray.

An established group of German roaches, no. A female carries her egg case for most of its 30-day incubation and drops it about when the eggs hatch (UC IPM), so killing tonight’s adults won’t stop the next batch. Vacuum up any roach egg cases you find and plan on a month.

How to Get Roaches Out of Your Car

Step 1: Clean it out. Remove trash, cans, food bags, cardboard and snack stashes, pull the floor mats and any child car seat, and vacuum seat tracks, console gaps, seat seams, door pockets, the glovebox, trunk and spare-tire well with a crevice tool. NPIC says to seal the vacuum bag in a plastic bag promptly, or freeze it.

Step 2: Set six sticky traps. UC IPM calls sticky traps the best way to detect roaches. Put one under each front seat against the seat track, in both trunk corners, the spare-tire well and behind the center console. Skip the dash and rear shelf: one maker warns heat and sunlight can melt the glue. More in roach traps.

Step 3: Put a bait station next to each trap. Roaches eat bait, go back to their hiding spots and die there, and others feed on their droppings. Push stations flush against the seat track or trunk edge, since roaches travel along edges. Common active ingredients are fipronil, indoxacarb, hydramethylnon and abamectin; check the label for where the product may be used. Pea-sized dots of gel bait can reach trunk seams, never seat fabric, and skip loose powders: diatomaceous earth can irritate the nose when breathed in.

Step 4: Recheck for a month. Bait can take 7 days or longer to work (UC IPM), and a few tiny nymphs in weeks 2 and 3 are normal as egg cases hatch. Add bait near traps still catching. For small striped roaches, the full rotation plan is in how to get rid of German roaches.

Is It Safe to Drive With Roaches in Your Car? Yes

NPIC says cockroaches don’t generally bite people, though their shed skins and waste can worsen allergy and asthma symptoms. If one runs across the dashboard while you drive, keep your eyes on the road and deal with it once parked.

Roach baits have virtually no odor and are of minimal hazard to children or pets, and sticky traps contain no poison. Keep stations under the front seats or in the trunk, never in cup holders or seat-back pockets, and move them to the trunk if your child can reach under the seat. If a child gets into one, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222; for a pet, call your vet.

Foggers and Sprays: Never in a Car

NPIC says not to use foggers in small, enclosed spaces, “such as in closets, cabinets, and most vehicles,” and bombs rarely work even in a house (see do roach bombs work). California’s public health department says spraying and fogging scatter roaches, and it reports a bus driver who developed a cough and wheezing after driving a freshly sprayed bus. Its transit advice is this same plan: remove food and water, then use baits.

How to Confirm They’re Gone

  • Check traps daily for the first week and replace full ones.
  • Watch the busiest trap, and add a second station beside it.
  • Count four straight weeks of empty traps, Rutgers’ finish line.
  • Leave one trap under a seat to catch newcomers.

Call a pro if traps still catch roaches after a month, your home is infested too and you can’t clear it, or roaches come out of the dashboard or vents. Ask whether they treat vehicles, and ask for baits, vacuuming or steam, not spraying or fogging, as the California transit guidance recommends.

  1. Bag every wrapper, can and box tonight.
  2. Vacuum under the seats and seal the bag.
  3. Set a trap and a bait station side by side in six spots.
  4. Put one trap under your kitchen sink.
  5. Leave no food or cardboard in the car overnight.
  6. Park away from lights and leaf litter if outdoor roaches keep landing on it.

Common questions

Don’t count on it; no university or health agency has published a test of this for roaches. Keep baiting through summer, with traps out of direct sun.
